My Race Report:
What an amazing and most challenging Race Course with 2116' of climbing in 29.25 miles. Like yesterday's TT race which 13 miles were part of this course was you were climbing uphill or rolling downhill with so few flats none that I can remember. It was brutal and pure sufferfest!!! Those from Mountain Country USA thought it was OK but those of us from the Flatland USA thought otherwise, but we all came here and we're up for the challenge!
I was a little concerned with the hills because I was just recovering from being sick for 2 weeks just before this race and could get any real training in much less the little hills in my area. The race was interesting, I had no clue as to how the race would be, Al I could do is relate how the races were 10+ years ago when I raced last. I had different thoughts of how it could go and it was a conservative race with a moderate pace up all the climbs which was great for me. A few climbs some pepper would be sprinkled in! the downhills were pretty tame, I had to feather my brakes most of the way down to keep from moving too far forward. This was perfect for me.
As we approached the last major climb before the end of the first lap I was on the inside shoulder surrounded by other racers with about 700 meters to go an attack happened, I was boxed in and could get around without slowly drastically which I did. By the time I got out and back up to speed the front 2/3 of the pack was gone. I work extremely hard to bridge the gap. it took me nearly 4 miles to get back on par. I pulled a few racers with me and died out and they ended up taking the lead, I had to sit in back because my legs were shot and finally they dropped me too. I didn't give up, 2 cars and an ambulance passed me and in jest I thought about catchng up with the ambulance to see I could hold for a lift and laughed to myself. Then a thought hit me catch up to them and draft for a brief moment then work your way up! I thought brilliant and I worked the plan and it worked! I didn't realize the group was just ahead of the chase cars until I came around. I was so happy not to be by myself.
Being with the pack was so much easier, in this pack there was a World Champion, last year's winner and several top 10 finishers I may have been one of the few first timers in the pack... when we got about 6.5 miles from a racer did an attack and no one chased him and the race leaders didn't budge one bit. So I thought it was the World Champion, the racers near me were commenting about why we were chasing. The attacker looked great and strong he got at least 150 yards ahead. When we got about 3 miles out the pace picked up and we caught the long rider. Now that we're getting closer to the final big climb you could see the racers getting primed for it I made sure not to get boxed in. We get 1000 meters away and the pace is now on fire, we hit the 500 meter mark and I was shifting gears and it didn't, that little stuffer cause my legs come to what felt like a half
I kept but lost big momentum, still manage to pass other there were about 6 of us fighting to get to the finish line, it didn't matter because the 10 were a head of us.What and Amazing Adventure to.be apart of!!! Be safe out there, enjoy your ride!
