There was a piece in the Phila Inquirer this week about 63 acres on Gravelly Road in Salem County NJ that was just acquired from the Morningstar Fellowship Church for $820,000. Funding was provided by NJ DEP's Green Acres, The Nature Conservancy, The New Jersey Conservation Foundation and Natural Lands. The parcel, considered part of Burden Hill Preserve (16,400 acres), was home to the Cohanzick tribe, ancestors of the Nanticoke and the Lenape tribes, which fall under the Algonquin language group. Now it will be used by the Native American Advancement Corp, out of Bridgeton NJ, which will put in nature trails and a museum in place of the church. I remembered seeing signs for Gravelly Road (spelled "Gravley" on at least one sign), and a quick search showed I had ridden by it many times. So I picked one of the ride files and modified it as a RwGPS route that includes riding on Gravelly, at least one mile of which is gravel. My Garmin went wonky right at the Woodstown Acme start of the ride, showing no cues and a Lost Satellite Connection message repeatedly. That was a little disconcerting, as I had just drawn up the route but did not know it by heart, and, for once, hadn't printed out a cue sheet. Fortunately I recalled the first half-dozen turns, and by that point the Garmin settled down; the only damage done was Garmin cheated me out of several early miles. Lots of "Neck" roads in that neck of the woods. Nice route, and a beautiful day to be on a bike. I didn't even mind the NW 8 mph headwinds during the last part of the ride.
