This is a repeat ride for us. We quite enjoyed camping on the top of Crescent Mountain. Even on this Labor Day holiday weekend, we were the only ones there.
We left our car in the Lava Lake SnoPark. It was a busy place, both coming and going. Maybe that kept the car safe. Maybe we were lucky. It certainly would be possible to park the car up the road closer to the trail head. It would be more lonely there, but fewer people would pass. There are Forest service Outhouses at this location.
Huckleberries are common along the trail. Delicious the following morning with breakfast. Pick some on the way up.
Water: fill your water bottles at home or at the very latest, there are a few streams before you begin the incline of Crescent Mountain. There is no water along the trail beyond the base (whether approaching from the south or the north).
With our bicycles loaded for a three day bikepacking trip, we did a fair amount of hike-a-bike up Crescent mountain. On the southwest side, there is a meadow that someone is trying to expand by girdling the trees. There were even more, fairly old trees recently girdled. Flowers were still blooming in the meadow and the views over the Cascade range to the southwest are truly beautiful. This was augmented by some of the smoke coming from Oak Ridge fires.
The trail was free of downfall.
There is broken glass, rusty nails and scattered wood from a fire lookout that has been dismantled. Only the concrete base remains. There are several flat areas for placing a tent with 270° views. Cascade volcanoes from Wy’East in the north through the Three Sisters and the Husband are the panorama. We have camped here twice in the summer and both times the dew was heavy or it rained.
