I was curious to see what Coyote Creek Trail was like now. Sections of it were closed due to flooding during the winter and they were still flooded in June when I was hoping to use them on my double. Bob knows the South Bay routes better than I do so I asked him to throw something together.
We started with some gravel and then snaked through the neighborhoods Los Altos, Saratoga and Los Gatos on some new streets and streets we rarely do.
It was fun but there were a lot of little punchy climbs and some longer, also punchy, climbs.
On the past two rides, my right knee has been bugging me and from around Morgan Hill to San Jose, it was bugging me again but about 10 miles from home it just went away. It's very strange since my knees haven't bugged me since getting my bike fit years ago. Not sure what's causing it now or why it would just go away on its own in the middle of a ride.
After lunch, it was time to head north and there was a pretty strong headwind. We were hoping it wasn't going to be the whole way back but it pretty much was.
Riding along Coyote Creek Trail, Sonny and I were chatting away when we got to Bailey Ave., the spot of the first trail closure due to flooding. I half noticed that the route took us off the trail on to the detour we had to do in the past but I ignored it because the plan was for us to check out the reopened sections.
I guess there was a misunderstanding because Bob had followed his route and was long gone while Sonny and I were still on the trail. We went up to the road and Sonny said he saw Bob off in the distance but I was never able to see him. Before the ride, Bob and mentioned some roads that I didn't recognize and had meant to look up. Turns out those were the detour roads. Oops.
Sonny and I continued on the trail and met up with Bob at the next major intersection, Metcalf Rd. There was another section of the trail to check out but Bob had routed Basking Ridge Rd. which was new so I was okay with making that detour and we eventually made it back to Hellyer for the last trail closure reopening. In the end we only missed the middle one, which we rode through when it was flooded.
Riding through San Jose wasn't too bad. I don't know if it was because of the holiday where most of the roads felt lighter with the exception of McKean.
On the way through the worst road on the route, Willow St., Bob saw an ice cream place so we stopped and all got massive brain freezes.
Before the ride I updated my Garmin and that seemed to fix the power meter disconnecting and my Garmin turning off randomly.
It was a little too hot on the way back up to San Jose but the temperature was generally pleasant otherwise. Overall the ride was nice, getting to check out some new stuff and some nice neighborhoods.
