I woke up this morning, opened the blinds to find gray skies. Blah! I didn’t really feel like riding anywhere and it took ages to figure out where I wanted to ride.
I might not have gone if the sun didn’t come out around lunch time. Even then, I had to force myself to go.
I was going to ride my Stumpjumper but when I was prepping it, I realized the rear brake pads needed replacing. All the descending White Mountain in the dark I guess.
I ran into Robin in the parking lot clocking out as I was clocking in.
Calero County is the blissful, fun, backyard ride away from home. The trails were in great condition for the most part. They patched up some of the rain damage (but not all) and it was super smooth. It also seemed like maybe the trails were swept because there wasn’t much loose over the hard pack and it was running fast. I had so much fun.
On the way back to the parking lot, I stopped at the four way intersection in the middle of the park to have a snack. There was a family there with three young kids, aged ~8 or 9 to 4 or 5 that had come over the mountain from Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve. I guess the parents wanted to go back they way they came because it was shorter but the kids wanted to do a loop.
I didn't realize the parents had e-bikes and had towed the kids up the hill and warned against going back the way they came but once I realized, it still seemed like a 50/50 choice between going back vs. taking Oak Cove Trail and taking the longer but flatter way back. I wished them good luck. Not sure which way they chose.
I got back to the San Vicente parking and I decided to tackle Santa Teresa. I left it until the end because I wasn’t sure how much time I would have.
It seemed like the neglected it compared to Calero. It was rockier and looser than I remembered. Lots of exposed baby heads and some steep descents that I did the last time but this time noped out of. I had planned to do the rock gardens of Stile Ranch but changed my mind.
Lots of steep climbing too. Basically the opposite of Calero County.
