I've been wanting to ride Purisima Creek for a while now and when Midpen said all the trails had reopened, I was even more motivated.
It was sunny, clear, and warm when I left but as I got to the top of 92 and Skyline, I could see fog. BOO!!!
It wasn't really an issue at the start but at the bottom the fog was more like rain. Towards the top, and along Skyline the trees had collected so much moisture that it was dripping as though it were raining.
It was warm and humid on the climb up Purisima Creek trail. Annoyingly, my glasses were fogging up.
Before going, I checked out the trail map and saw that while Whittemore Gulch has reopened, it's closed to bikes and horses. I decided to ride to the trailhead to scope it out and there was a sign saying they closed it to protect repairs as they settle permanently and will reopen next year when the seasonal closure lifts. Makes sense. They should put that on the website.
The beginning of Harkins Ridge is a lot more technical than it used to be. There's a good surface layer of dirt that's been washed away. What was once just a little rocky to start was now mostly exposed rocks and the rooty section was more like a rock garden level of exposed now. And further down the trail there were more sections that used to be smooth but were now almost rock gardens.
At the start of the ride, it seemed like hero dirt but Harkins Ridge was a lot of loose rock over hard pack.
On the way down, I came around a corner a spooked a deer. There was no one around but me and the animals and probably mountain lions.
Purisima Creek Trail had quite a few sections were the sides and washed away into the creek. Mostly because of fallen trees. And in the upper half, it looked like they had to fully rebuild a decent length of trail that had completely washed away.
Shortly after the start of the steep section, I had some leaves get caught where the chainstays meet the BB and they were rubbing against my rear tire annoyingly. I waited until a flatter section to stop and just as I was about to, I watched a leaf run through my chainring and take the chain off of it. Unfortunately it fell inside. After getting it back on the chain at the back had fallen off, also inside between the cassette and spokes, while the chain was slack.
Luckily, I was didn't jam it and was able to continue. Being stuck down there would've sucked.
Because of the fog and it being pretty close to sunset, it was kind of dark under the canopy.
UPDATE: Something I was worried about during the ride was getting mosquito bites and I can confirm now, the next day, that I did get some. BOO!!!
