This was meant to be a little wander, poking around Kodachrome State Park. I really had no idea what to expect, but it’s a gem! Even the little loop in the middle turned out to be fortuitously the right decision for easy riding.
I can highly recommend staying at Kodachrome State Park. The east loops are rustic with good views of Bryce Canyon Ridge. The West loops have showers that would be comfortable in an upscale home. Be sure to check them out after your ride.
The initial roads are wide and smooth gravel. Then you enter the backcountry though a wash (Rock Springs Creek). The Rock Springs - Canyon on Creek Parking isn’t much to speak of, and I could not find the trail on my map that descends the canyon to some petroglyphs, so I left out the hike portion of the ride.
There are some undulations, and we encountered six head of cattle in this area. Then it’s a gradual climb. One could continue out to the southwest, but we angled to the south east, and left the juniper trees for an area of sage. When we turned around, we had a view of the entire west and north Ridgeline. This view alone makes the ride worth doing. We found a sandstone spire, hidden in the trees and had lunch there.
Then we continued south on the county road. Gradually, their reviews out to either side as this double track follows the gentle Ridgeline. there are areas of Sand that required us to walk. There are centuries old pinion pine. The official road seems to end at a nice viewpoint. However, I strongly recommend continuing south on double track that, although fainter, is still easy to follow. It also is not marked on some maps. at the very end of the track, you pop out of trees, and have a view of the remainder of the Escalante grand staircase. I can’t prove it, but I suspect you can see all the way to the Grand Canyon’s North rim.
Although it seemed like nobody ever came up there, when we turned around, there was a local park ranger, and his dog out for an excursion that had driven their four-wheel-drive most of the way up the county road. Otherwise, the area was deserted.
Returning down the county road all the way, the lower end gets a bit steeper. it was a bit easier to ride through the sand on the descent than it was to try climbing through it. At the end, you passed through several washes. I suspect this would be a more difficult climb than the one we chose. I probably would have to walk much of it.
Although you’re in forest most of the time, the intermittent views make this a spectacular gravel ride.
