Tues Sep 26 – Cycle Day 5 – Worms to Nierstein – 62.1 kms – App=358 meters (RWGPS=447 Meters)
<<< Worms Tour, Rough Roads, Sugar Beet Harvester, Lunch overlooking the Rhine River >>>
On our way out of town, we stopped at a few tourist spots along the way, with one of them being Martin Luthor’s Memorial.
As we exited Worms, it was exciting returning through the large city gate on the bridge, which led us over the Rhine River, back to the right bank.
At the 8.2 mark, we saw a huge sugar beet harvester right by the cycle path. We learned that what we thought were rutabagas, was in fact, sugar beets. See Karen’s section in our Cycle Summary in Day 6.
At Gernsheim, we ate lunch at a restaurant by the Rhine River. Everyone enjoyed the food and the outdoor patio ambiance. We had a view of the river and the small ferry that kept moving back and forth.
Later we came across some rough roads in a rural area around some fields. In some sections, the pavement had eroded and there were cobble stones. Could this be Roman roads?????
From km 42.6 to 55.3 we rode through a portion of the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Nature Reserve (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%BChkopf-Knoblochsaue). Once again, like other forest areas we have cycled through, the view and the coolness of the trees was appreciated.
We have been seeing swans everyday. Today did not disappoint.
When we got to our hotel, instead of each of us going to our rooms to shower and meet up to go to supper as we had been doing, Karen suggested that we relax and enjoy the sun and their courtyard cafe right away with some thirst quenching Happy Hour beers. We agreed and had a most wonderful time. We talked to some other hotel guests.
Then we decided to order Germany’s famous soft pretzel for an appetizer along with a bottle of local white Riesling wine. The pretzel was served with a delicious cheese dipping sauce. Yum yum! And the bottle of wine became 2. We were very, very relaxed.😁. Later for supper we walked to a nearby restaurant. It was a bit cool outside, so we ate inside and the place was pipping hot.
