Didn't get to leave as early as I have been used to leaving on these long rides this time, but I managed to get off before sunrise. I figured that since it was later, I would have more traffic to contend with on the way through Newnan but it was a non issue, no problems at all so I guess it was still early enough.
The weather was still pretty warm at the beginning and it had only just stopped drizzling overnight so I was a bit worried that I would face some muddy roads. The soft section of Bethel road at the edge of Heard county was pretty muddy and slow but better than in the past as they've come and graded it as well as placing some rocks in the worst sections. I was a bit worried that the Alabama roads would be like this but as it turned out, this was the muddiest and slowest road of the whole route.
I rolled in to Franklin and had planned to explore a trail by the river there, but there was a market festival thingie going on with people all over the place so I skipped it. I stopped at the DG and just grabbed a couple things since I would be in Wedowee in only like 40 more miles.
The strong west wind really began to factor in and slow me down after Franklin. I rode lots of great gravel, and had a closed wooden bridge but it was easy to approach and cross, just behind some large mounds of dirt covered in kudzu. Randolph county gravel was pretty fast moving and had almost no mud.
I actually got really low on water in between Franklin and Wedowee and so I found a church at the high point of the route that had very good well water from a faucet. At length I arrived in Wedowee ready for more snacks and found an arts and crafts festival lining the main highway through town. I grabbed tons of snacks and a gatorade for my jersey. I stuffed everything full because I wouldn't have another store till 50 more miles or so in Franklin. Since it was relatively warm I now take these gaps mid big ride seriously because I always seem to underestimate how much I need.
There was one missing bridge adventure not too far from the line. Can't do one of these rides without a least one. It plainly stated that the bridge was out at the beginning of the road, and the place where the bridge used to be was covered in overgrowth and vines everywhere. So it was a little bit of a struggle to get down and across even though the creek was tiny and the bank was pretty short. I was a tad worried that there would be no road at all on the other side, but thankfully out of the kudzu I spied a faint disused road beside a fence line and was relieved. Climbed out no problem having only lost about 15 minutes in the crossing.
I had a very pleasant ride through Heard county again to Franklin for my last stop right at sunset at the same Dollar General. I was in great spirits as the sun set and I rode east on gravel towards Newnan. I had to make up 3 or so miles that I had cut off to bring me back up to over 205 and I chose to do this by riding more new roads to me along Smokey road. Getting through Newnan was a breeze, and even highway 34 was pretty dead by the time I got there after 10pm. I was absolutely flying with a strong west wind at my back, fast rolling pavement and a long gradual downhill to shoal and line creek. I made it in long before midnight(which was my goal), tired but still feeling pretty good.
