I left early enough that I faced my first obstacle well before sunrise, Meadows Boone road. I honestly didn't really suspect it would be gated in the middle. But I came to a house and a gate near a creek and there being no sign at all, I went around expecting a missing bridge and a perfectly good road on the other side. A really big loud dog barked the whole time I was riding down to the creek and crossing(on foot) gingerly because of the soft mud due to cattle hooves. I got to the other side and found the roadbed all overgrown and with downed trees everywhere, but there was a track that paralelled it so I took that. The forest had been clearcut a few years ago and had some thick undergrowth but the track was clear. I went around a tall freestanding deer stand and knew instantly that the road was private but since it was around 5am it didn't really matter much. Soon I found the other gate and went around it back to safety.
I continued on and rode through both Luthersville and Grantville before sunrise and then to Corinth where I rode some rural flavored urban subdivision roads. Several were gravel and with mobile homes on large lots.
I made my way to the north part of West Point lake and rode a track in a Army Corps of Engineers property used for hunting near the lake. No trucks parked at the gate entrance so I proceeded on this the first day of firearm hunting for deer for the season. I do enjoy a good loop or P and so I took some other paths once the track I was on ended in a field, and found myself on another road. No signs anywhere so I assumed I was still on public land. I popped out to another road and i decided to make my way back to the original road(which wasn't far away). While going through an open area I heard a voice and a hunter in a deer stand politely informed me I was on private property, I apologized and left, actually heading out a different way but the quickest way back out to the highway. I don't think he saw the way I had come in which was far longer. I had no trouble the remaining third of a mile back to where I was originally and I headed on my way.
I did lots of hilly lake subdivision roads and stopped at a Dollar General. I had just found a faucet at a Methodist church on top of a hill so I was good on water and only needed snacks and an additional insurance powerade. I loaded up since I wanted to possibly have the option to skip the gas station in 40 or so miles and push on to Franklin at around 60 more miles.
I decided at the last minute to explore Georgia park and did every road there, even the unmaintained ones all overgrown. And did some more overgrown and closed ones, including a lot of them in Whitewater recreation area. Another highlight was Antioch road. It is really dry this year and so the lake is down several feet. The old pavement was still laying there on the lakebed and visible underneath the water going off south. I rode some of it just because.
I rode by the gas station in Glenn because I was feeling pretty good and confident that I would be fine until Franklin(I kinda don't like gas stations it's small talk and guaranteed no self checkouts). Almost right away I turned onto a gravel road I had been down before behind an SUV, right past a bridge out sign that had me perplexed. The man stopped and rolled down his window and informed me that the bridge had been damaged recently by an overweight truck and had been actually removed completely by the county. I wasn't deterred by this but the guy really insisted that there was no way through(and for most people this would be a reasonable assumption). At first I was just going to go anyway and ford it but eventually he convinced me to not bother with it today. I turned around and found a very easy detour on back roads which even included a road I had not been on yet. It only added a couple of miles and I was back on route.
I did some more exploring near the river in an Army Corps campground managed by Heard County that was pretty nice and a couple more extra roads. Then I stopped for the last time in Franklin. After a very extended middle section and only two stops I would have thought i'd feel not all that fast but after this stop I really felt terrific and rode pretty hard on the gravel roads leading out of Franklin. To the point that I actually set PRs. I still felt great all the way through Newnan and on the now familiar way through on the LINC trail and Summergrove and White Oak, and flew down the shoulder of 34 with a strong west wind behind me and got home well before I thought I would and actually beat sunset by a good bit.
