Got up earlier than I had planned and while it's generally always advised to leave as early as possible especially when riding through busy areas, I decided to leave at the leisurely hour of 3am due to when I would have my first stop and I needed it to be open.
The weather has been crazy warm lately and I was on the edge of needing knee warmers and ear warmers(or anything really). I looked at the temp at the airport and it was 54 and so I decided to wear everything for comfort sake because usually the temp drops several more degrees in the remaining hours before sunrise. However the actual temp almost everywhere else was well above 54 and it only settled down to about 53 right before sunrise so I was a bit overdressed. I didn't want to stop and take things off only to regret it though, so I just rode most of the morning with my arm warmers pulled down. I was sweating a bit but not too uncomfortable.
I figured since I was leaving so ridiculously early that McDonough road would be dead. It never was busy by any means but it definitely picked up after 5. With my radar light on I was super visible(as always) and never had trouble. And bonus, as I approached the outskirts of McDonough, I gained a four lane highway with either a shoulder or painted bike lane. so by now the traffic picked up, especially near the interstate, but it was fine. After I passed the interstate it was actually pretty dead going east.
Had no real confusion of any note when navigating through the subdivisions of McDonough and no surprises that caused any detours. There was an unpaved road in between subdivision areas that had a small gate(but no signs) that was easy to ride around. The road was unmaintained but open and clear. The other end wasn't gated and landscapers had been piling fill dirt and yard debris up to the point that would fill dozens of households' raised garden bed needs.
I was getting rather in need of a pick me up and more snacks by the time I rolled back through downtown. I had two Dollar Generals lined up about 5 miles apart and I decided I couldn't wait so I stopped at the first one. It was converted from something else, probably a Rite Aid and so had roof overhangs over the sidewalks and some trash cans out front. Such a luxury. It like most of the ones I visit nowadays had a working self checkout but my goodness they can't keep these places stocked at all. They're losing so much sales. On some aisles half the space is just empty. And forget about small register items. There's just nothing there basically. They do sort of try to keep the register with a person stocked, but of course there's always someone in the way and i'd rather check out myself anyway. I digress.
As I left the store i definitely felt a nature stop coming and so I rode out and kept an eye for a park or even just a stray porta potty anywhere. After a short bit in a grassy area I actually found a wide one that had a standalone plastic sink next to it, perhaps for the church across the street? It didn't look much like a park since it was just a grassy field but whatever, I needed it and was glad it was there. It had toilet paper AND hand sanitizer. Although the inside looked like it had just seen festival level traffic and hygiene.
I headed south and east from Mcdonough and towards a reservoir where I rode some dead end rural subdivision as well as roads that never went anywhere. Wind was very light still around mid day and it was very hot for this time of year, at least 80 by noon.
At length I made my way down to Jackson without issue and I was again very ready for a cold drink and more snacks. I stopped at a CVS just because it happened to be easy to route by and I was reminded why I prefer Dollar General. Easily a third more than I would have paid for the same stuff at a DG. At least it was easy in and out and I had a self checkout I suppose.
All loaded up and ready for the last third or so and hardest bit of the route, I rolled into the town branch connector from Jackson to Dauset. This was all modern wide machine cut singletrack and so it was very fast rolling on the gravel bike and I only saw one cyclist and two dog walkers near the trailhead. After that I saw nobody, even well into Dauset proper to the point where I was beginning to get scared that it was closed down for a hunting party or something. There wasn't anything posted about that at the trailhead and I have no idea if they even do that sort of thing but that's where my mind went. One of the nicest days of the year and it was deserted. I really expected the main south trailhead to be empty but it had a few cars as well. I suppose there's so many trails that seeing someone else is fairly unlikely.
While on GA 36 right before the I-75 crossing I spotted a license plate in the shoulder. It just so happens I finally got a small packable bag to put in my handlebar bag for just such an occasion(I collect them). It fit in perfectly and I slung it over my shoulders for the rest of the ride and it wasn't too much of a bother. It was a Georgia plate with a Henry county tag, from a trailer.
By now the wind had picked up slightly and was coming in from the south southeast, and with the rest of the route mostly flat pavement, I made really good time. I stopped for the last time at a gas station on 16 in Spalding county and was good for the rest of the ride. I definitely burned through supplies on this ride, spending more than I have in a good long while on a ride. But it was all necessary and I felt pretty decent the whole way till towards PTC when I was probably a bit dehydrated and hungry. But I made it well before sunset and much earlier than I thought.
