Steve P started at Yorba Regional Park along the Santa Ana River Trail (SART) so he started at almost the half way point: mile 26.5. I started from my house in Riverside 1 hr 45 min before he rolled out from the park. Half of my distance was filled with stop lights and dodging pot holes.
I caught him at mile 34. Lots of stretches where I road solidly at 25 and 32 mph.
A part of my mission in inviting him to do this ride was to based on my knowing that his prior built endurance had faded a lot due to his having to travel back east for family stuff without his trike.
I wanted to look for biomechanical anomalies in his pedal stroke during fatigue stages of the ride.
Stuck gold! His left legs is not moving symmetrically and not putting out the same power or muscle firing timing or sequence.
Gave him some pointers on how to furthered trouble shoot and begin to bring balance to power output and feel what’s it like to ride with functionally 2 legs participating instead of one.
He fatigued hard on the way back so focused on staying with him and making sure he didn’t go too deep in the dehydration and bonking modes.
At one point I was pulled over on the trail waiting for him to catch up and 3 roadies on nice carbon bikes came up from the direction Steve was coming from and a gust of wind tossed the rear guy into the read wheel of his drafting person resultingg in his landing on his helmet and shoulder. I got it all on film. I’ll post it to YouTube tomorrow.
I rolled over sorted out his bike to make it ridable again. He was grateful.
Dropped him off at YRP and lit the after burners only to get reminded the canyon had head winds up to 30 mph! Good that I grew up in postage stamp flat and windy from every direction Illinois. Just dug into all those time trialing into the wind cellular memory and tapped it out.
