Temperature was in the upper teens with pretty strong NW wind around 10-15mph even in the early morning. I overdressed a bit but as a result wasn't cold most of the time. I had to wait in Tyrone on Palmetto road for a right of way trimming operation, about 5 minutes, and once I got going my nose hurt as it cooled off once again. Hands still warm and actually probably a bit too warm. I had my warmest non electric gloves and Bar Mitts. Used my electric sole warmers for the first time and these kept my toes warm at the lowest setting till it got to around freezing and I turned them off.
Had to stop at the Fairburn Yard on Gullatt road for a train that took 15 minutes at least. I was really warm waiting on it. I took the time to change to my lighter gloves since I was sweating in my heavier ones. This was a big mistake as they were freezing once I got going and I stopped at Wilkerson Mill park and warmed them up quick in the bathroom(unlocked and warm inside but no water in the sinks). Nose hurt as it cooled off again but after a few minutes everything was warm again.
Going was really slow with the bitter wind plus a really, really hilly series of dead end roads in Douglas county. Super steep and most of the cul de sacs were on a 10% or so grade at the end. So very slow going. I didn't have much issue with the traffic on 154/166.
Dollar General stop was really needed as I was needing more fluids and salty things. I brought two insulated bottles in the hopes that the water wouldn't freeze and the first one didn't freeze all the way and allowed a trickle till the first stop. But the other one was frozen shut and I broke the top with my teeth, and I couldn't get the top unscrewed at all it was so frozen. So I bought two lukewarm Mt Dews and put one in a bottle holder and the other inside the good bottle after drinking the remaining water. While eating a bit of chips quickly and filling bottles and such outside the store, my hands got really cold again and it took a good 10 minutes of riding to get them warm again.
Trip back across the river on the north 154 crossing was actually quite nice and easy and safe I would say. Pretty easy to get back to Cochran road and Campbellton. So a good corridor to head back home along for future rides perhaps.
Another note, my radar would only last 2.5 or so hours before it would die and i'd have to switch it out and recharge. This is about half the normal charge when temperatures are warm.
