Originally I thought I would have to cycle all the way to the Alex Fraser bridge and then back to get across the Fraser River, as bike are not allowed in the Massey tunnel. Luckily Jeff told me that there is a free bike shuttle service through the tunnel. It runs year round for commuters in the morning and the evening and then for the summer it runs all day. They have a van that pulls a trailer that takes the bikes. What a great service. It made for the final leg to much more enjoyable. Delta has a similar feel to Holland with all the small vegetable farmers mixed in with towns and houses.
It was a good trip, way more tiring that I was expecting but a great feeling of accomplishment. It is an enjoyable way to travel if you have the time. If I was to do it again I would take more time and take more breaks in the day to see and explore around.
In all 404.2 km trip.
Some logistic aspects of the trip
- bike box worked great. A bit awkward to haul around the airport, but then I discovered that yes it does fit on a luggage cart.
- Stored the bike box at the airport for $9.50 a day.
- Planning of routes was done by downloading routes from the trails bc website. The routes were then loaded into RideWithGPS. Then they had to be traced in RideWithGPS to get turn by turn navigation set up.
- Mounted my iphone on the bike using quad lock. Worked really well. Phone was attached securely, easy to take on and off and I think little stress on the phone. Allowed for quick confirmation of route on the map versus digging the phone out of a pocket
- Used wireless headphones to receive the turn by turn instructions
- Routes were downloaded to the RideWithGPS app so was usable without cell phone coverage. Had cell phone coverage for 98% of the trip.
- Did carry printed maps from RideWithGPS but never used them.
- Did carry a backup battery that could be used to charge phone. Used it only on one day. Had phone and RideWithGPs app configured to consume low battery power. Could have turned off cell coverage to improve it some more.
