Day 2 opened with the sound of unzipping sleeping bags and gathering of bedding. I changed and packed up and headed toward Tracy Park. After downing a couple of donuts from the Original Crispie Creme Donuts (RIP?) and some hot chocolate (no coffee!!!), I headed out.
The first 10 or so miles started like the previous day, misty and cool. I packed much lighter and left the jackets in my luggage. I wouldn't be needing them today as temps were promising to be the same as day1. The sky started to open up about halfway to Waverly, drizzling much of the next 50 miles. I pulled into Waverly with shoes full of water. The most challenging part of the ride was behind us.
The rain gave way to partly cloudy skies and a nice tailwind shortly after lunch. It was a greatly needed push for sore knees and tired legs.
Ice cream, caramel syrup, bananas and tequila awaited us after the finish. They call them bananas TOSRV (a play on bananas foster). I picked up my luggage and changed out of my soaking clothes, collected my completion certificate, and enjoyed some ice cream. I was pretty wiped out from the 214 miles, wind, rain, sun, and overeating. The wall of sound that is Soundgarden accompanied my drive home (RIP Chris Cornell).
While I enjoyed most of the ride, it was fairly unremarkable considering the cost and travel time involved. The support was excellent as were the food and lunch stops. However, the route was not as scenic as I expected, it was flatter than I expected, and the route was not marked well. Overall I'd say the organizers and volunteers did a great job. For locals and those that make it a tradition, I'm sure the ride will continue to be an attraction.
