I left early but not crazy early so I could get to Jonesboro on 54 without much traffic and this worked well, especially on a Sunday. I barely saw any cars at all even after the dawn started. Sunday is such a great time to ride. The temperature was a balmy 52 or so. I wore leg warmers, ear and arm warmers and was borderline hot. This despite it being so foggy that it was misting lightly most of the time till mid morning.
I was so alone that I was beginning to thing I got up too early! But it was nice to not have to worry about any cars or distractions at all for so many hours.
First stop was at a Kroger at around mile 90 and I had gone through most of my water by this point and a lot of my snacks. I filled everything back up again and got going. Traffic was a bit higher but it was still church time and I definitely went by a few churches with full parking lots.
Lots of dead end roads and subdivisions, and I didn't have any route problems on this ride at all. Traffic picked up throughout the day but it was never really that bad, mostly probably because I was never on any really busy roads. Plus Sunday.
I negotiated a closed road that had a bridge washout. The bridge was still spanning the creek but it was pushed downstream about 50 feet or so and still intact. I threw the bike on and climbed up via a pallet someone had placed next to the side as a ladder. There were beaten down paths leading to and from this bridge so others are doing the same. I also took the opportunity of this quiet gravel road and secluded woods to take a nature break.
Stopped at Locust Grove and neglected to turn when I was supposed to, so I ended up doing a little extra loop which added a couple of miles. Got back going and did a few more dead end roads, and by this time I was kinda ready to be done with the subdivisions and get back rolling on faster roads. I was worried this whole ride about my left sitbone which was still a bit sore from the previous weekend's ride. But after swapping to a newer saddle that I already had and slightly turning it a bit, I was really comfortable the whole time.
What ended up being the worry of the ride was actually the bike itself. I noticed that since visiting Rochelle that there was a slight vibration coming from the rear of the bike when coasting. I figured one of the bearings was going out but it still rolled so I decided to leave it. On this ride the hub was refusing to freewheel properly and causing the chain to skip over the small cogs on fast downhills. I ended up getting into a rhythm of shifting to big cogs for coasting, and then when I wanted to pedal again, I would be careful to spin up and gradually shift while applying power the whole time. This worked pretty well for the rest of the ride. But it made riding sightly more difficult and a bit slower.
After just south of Locust Grove and once I crossed I-75 I was in rural riding for the remainder and it was just perfect. Very light east winds, still cloudy skies and mid sixties. I stopped for the last time at a DG on US41 and got lots of insurance food and fluids. Still needed lights for the last hour or so on the ride in to town which was pretty uneventful. I felt really good the whole ride, although I was fading a bit on the paths in town. Really glad I got my saddle situation all sorted out and got another good long ride in to take advantage of such a perfect day.
