To beat the heat, I rode for the second time Pamela B's very scenic "Purgatory to Paradise " 227km RSC route. The middle 50 miles of this ride is almost all at over 600 feet elevation. It was cooler and drier than the lowlands, although still plenty hot. Stores are few and far between on this section, but streams are many, and I found myself thinking about carrying water purification equipment next time. On a Sunday afternoon, I found the store in Temple closed (with a note on the door to call a phone number for service). Reluctant to trouble them to sell a single jug of water, I proceeded on for five mostly downhill miles to Greenville. Greenville seemed deserted, but I found a convenience store on the main drag, open for business.
