Another ride on the Two Capes loop route. The ride starts at Tillamook Bay College in Tillamook. The first 8.5 miles is a nice warm-up. Flat and today, with a nice tailwind. The first big hill is Cape Meares Rd, or Bayshore Drive per Google Maps. This road had been closed for awhile (at least 3 years) due to slides and washouts. However, the road is completely redone. But, the climb is steeper and longer. The final 1/2 mile or so is a constant 11-12% pitch. The downhill is great, but the road comes out about a mile south of the Cape Meares turnout, which means a little bonus climbing. First stop is Cape Meares. A nasty little climb back out of there, 11-13% grade for the first 1/3 mile or so. Then it's downhill to Short Beach, followed by another climb, not as steep, then another descent into Oceanside. Second stop Oceanside Beach. Return through Oceanside for a short downhill right along the coastline followed by another climb, but only at 6-8%. Then, it's a downhill into Netarts. Continue through Netarts to Netarts Bay Drive. This road follows the bay to Whiskey Creek Rd. There are a few miles of short rollers to the Cape Lookout turnoff. Cape Lookout makes a great rest stop because there is a monster hill coming out of there. The 2.75 mile climb reaches a max of 10% early on, then eases to 7-8% for awhile. The final 1/2 mile or so is 8-9%. Upon reaching the top, there is a beautiful, long downhill. Need to take care though due to shaded rough spots. Finally, at mile 31.1 is the T-intersection at Sandlake Rd. Continue straight for the last climb, 1.3 miles and 200 feet elevation gain. Then it's 4.5 miles to Highway 101. Enjoyed more tailwind on this 4.5 mile stretch. Easy to maintain 24-25 mph. The last leg is a 7.5 miles stretch on Highway 101, mostly tailwind. Finally turn left onto Tillamook River Rd and follow this back into town. The last 2.5 miles goes by the high school and loops back to the college.
