This section was by far the most difficult and I question if it was all the correct part of the route. The trail comes down from high elevation along a steep canyon on your East side. Decent gravel - not the ball bearings of some roads. When it crosses HWY 31, it continues on the other side. This is where things go from beginner/intermediate to expert-you-could-die-out-here. I couldn't really stop for pictures because if you stop you might not get started again (by yourself). The trail was immediately a 4WD "road" that barely shows on topo maps. I followed the GPS track I got from someone and it wandered around like they were feeling out the track. The "road" had very steep sections with rocks, turns, and loose dirt mixed. Some parts had rocks like basket balls and larger. If you tipped over here, you'd be in trouble. 3.5 hours to go 10 miles. It was 103F and I drank a gallon of H2O. I wore a full suit and had I crashed might have been happy about that. I tipped over twice but was able to continue. I lost the trail when it turned into a cow path. The entire route was rocky and 1st gear only. It's the kind of trail that is no fun and just a check mark for the badge of honor to survive. It was so bright with the overhead sun that I could not see the phone's screen. I made a shade and resorted to topo maps to plot an escape path; the next 20 miles would not be possible with my remaining water and energy. An injury out here would mean death without an SOS device (which I had 2 of). I wouldn't ride this again, even with a partner, because it's just a man/machine grinder. Maybe on a tiny bike with no gear; I was loaded for camping and all food for the entire trip.
After that section, I was tired and a bit dehydrated, so I booked it by roads to my next camp. I had heard that the "baby heads" section out of Christmas Valley was "hard", but I think it would be much easier than this section of the 4WD.
