Shopped at then asked permission to park in a grocery store lot. There are better parking choices, but at the time the town was unknown to us and time was short.
The distance to the first store stop was 20 miles. Normally not a concern, but the day of this ride the temp in that portion of the route was 99 to 115 degrees (per my GPS). At the store stop their thermometer read 104 in the shade. The air was very dry (about 20%) and there was a 15 mph head wind on the portion leading to Sattley. The store there had a small supply of cold drinks on ice in a coolre in their back room. That was great to have before the upcoming 6 mile hill climb. Our two 24 oz water bottles each would not have lasted much longer, definitely not to Bassett's Station without the stop at Sattley Cash Store.
Be prepared: The two climbs before and after Bassett's Station are steady, mid-grade steep and long. Though less so for the second mountain, it too is a big climb. If you are from lower altitudes I suggest acclimating before riding this route.
At mile 51.7 we took a detour from the route (normally it would go to Portola via A15). I had GPS trouble that started at that time.
We went through Clio and took a dirt & gravel road from about mile 53 to 56. OK on a road bike if you don't mind riding on gravel and light silt. Though this section (about 5 miles) would not be pleasant in the rain (there would be much mud). The upside is that it's a scenic road through a forest. This entire route was low traffic on an early July Saturday.
