Oh the awesome 12 mile Kitt Peak climb and descent! Snow on the ground at the top. Mike and I were watching the clouds around the top of Kitt all the while we were heading to 3-points, hoping they would disappear bc it was sort of chilly already! Mike was again the stronger of the 2 of us. We fueled at 3-points and headed up to Kitt. Once we reached Kitt Peak turn-off, I said good bye to Mike. On this climb, though I could see him up ahead of me on the switchbacks, yet I think my time was about the same to do the climb as back on the Kitt Peak 200 last year. At the top we stopped for a bit. Put on warmer gear for a very chilly descent. Mike was fearful of how cold it would be as he had just down the 300k Kitt Peak last weekend and froze on the descent. My right middle finger tip was numb at the bottom. I wore jersey, vest, sun sleeves, arm warmers, and orange jacket, with gloves and my usual skull cap. Other than the finger, I was cold, but ok.
On out to Sells on a fast run. I knew it would be slow back as the wind would hurt us. At Sells I made the big mistake of not drinking ANY extra fluid! UGH. I walked out of the store and saw Mike sitting there with 2 big AZ Ice tea and knew I should have gotten something, yet I didn't. So on way back, I started to cramp. Stopped ( mile 105) and tool 3 electrolytes gel tabs, back on bike and a bit later my left leg cramped (mile 113) and I stopped a couple minutes. Of course Mike was gone by this time, Never again to be seen.
At 3-points I downed 2 small bottles ( I think 12 oz) chocolate milk and a 12-16oz tomato juice! Off with the wind at my back for the run to Arivaca. I knew the mercantile closed at 7 and knew I would not make it by then, so it would have be be the Cantina for me. Had a good fast ride to Arivaca Rd turn at mile 165.4 when it was 7pm. So took it a bit slower over to Arivaca, playing games with how long I could leave my headlight off! Not a single car on this smooth pavement. About 1.5 miles left to Arivaca, at which I had the light on, my chain dumped and as I stopped to manually put it on, I heard a bunch of coyotes. That was a bit scary.
Once at the Cantina, the 7 or so patrons and gal bartender was very friendly. Warning me of all the different vehicles on the road, asking if i had lights, warmer clothes etc. They offered to buy me a drink! I declined. I pulled my bike inside the cantina and put on my blue woolie, orange jacket and gloves! Yes a bit warm for the 3 miles of climb out of Arivaca but I did not want to mess with that in the pitch dark on the road. There were a total of 2 cars on the road heading to I-19.
Similar lack of vehicles 205 - 235. Then the fun bike trail. I came around a little bend in the tail and down a slight slope and in front of me in middle of path I could see something like a brown big cat - small dog sitting there. Then it opened it wings and tried to climb straight up. It was a red-tailed hawk! That was scary and cool as I ducked right under it as it was just above my head.
Long day of cycling! Stephen had mashed potatoes and ham for me at his house! My Easter meal I never had! Now for 3.5 hrs of sleep before tomorrow's 200km to finish the 600k.
