Sensing that my rear derailleur was not shifting as sharply as it should, and suspecting that I still hadn't gotten it mounted correctly, I stopped by Cøunty Cycle, a bike shop in Beamsville, to get it assessed. The mechanic confirmed that I had indeed mounted it wrong on my second attempt. He kindly offered to tweak the derailleur hanger alignment, check the indexing, etc., to get it into peak performance. Unfortunately, as soon as he tried, the derailleur hanger snapped 💥!
To be clear, I am not blaming the mechanic at all. Quite the contrary. I had consented to the work and was watching him the whole time, and saw that he had done nothing wrong. If he hadn't snapped it, I would probably have done so myself sometime in the future. Better that it happened to him than to me. 😛
But now we were in a bind. I did bring a spare derailleur hanger — but I had left it in Toronto. What happened next? You wouldn't believe it unless you saw the photos.
Anyway, I'm grateful to them for…
- Dropping everything to work on my bike as soon as I walked in
- Making an attempt to get my bike performing perfectly
- Going to heroic lengths with extraordinary ingenuity to rectify a seemingly impossible situation which wasn't their fault
- Staying a few minutes after their closing time
Oh, and they sell some high-end road bikes (Cervélos), mountain bikes, as well as some specialty bike products that I wouldn't even know where to find in any Vancouver bike shop. They have totally exceeded my expectations for a bike shop in a rural village.
