First part of this ride is on paved roads. Park immediately after signs for Government Mineral Springs (just after fish hatchery), where Wind River turns sharply to right. Old Man Pass and McClellan Overlook (view of Mt St Helens off Curly Creek Road) are worthwhile out and back rides (or continue down Curly Creek Road and climb back up). For a longer expedition and loop, continue on Wind River Road/NF-30 to end of pavement (mile 21 roughly after Lone Butte Snow Park), right on NF-65 for gradual climb past trail head for Thomas Lake, then long somewhat tedious decent on bumpy gravel till pavement starts again. Thomas Lake trailhead is about 4000 feet, so beware of snow in spring. Also there were 2 road washouts on NF-65 I was able to get around, one by crossing dry creekbed (not sure if spring would be more difficult).
Panther Creek Falls (mile 37.7, marked on RWGPS map) is a nice spot to rest and appreciate a beautiful waterfall, but requires a short walk down a trail (150 feet). Look for unmarked trailhead on right side of road after sharp right/u turn, past quarry parking on left, arrows painted on road if I remember correctly pointing to trailhead.
To complete loop, take right on Warren Gap road at Panther Creek Campground (water pump near entrance) for shortcut back to Wind River Road, which I generally don't like to ride south of Government Mineral Springs because of traffic and lack of shoulders but this last bit isn't too bad. Generally I'd avoid doing this ride on holiday weekends, as traffic is substantially worse.
