Started off the ride on my Jamis Dakota MTB with the intent to combine riding in Deerfield with some dirt roads, knowing that the more exposed roads would be hotter but would add some additional miles and hills. All went well except that I had to backtrack on Gilmore since it doesn't go through. Then halfway up the first hill on Littlefield Road my drivetrain started acting up. Upon closer inspection I found that three of the four inner chainring bolts were gone and the fourth was barely holding the inner chainring to the outer one--the inner ring was just dangling and flopping around! Not sure how that happened, but walked to the top of the hill and was able to retighten the single bolt with my multi-tool. I turned around and cut my ride short, knowing that I didn't have the use of the small ring.
Riding back through the park, I decided to take one loop before heading home. On my "favorite" turn on Malcom's Trail, by front wheel started to wash out and rather than try to save it, I dumped the bike since I was heading for a crash into a stout pine tree. Ended up skinning up my shin and my small chainring came loose again. I pedaled toward home and stopped overlooking the river to retighten the chainring with the single bolt so I could get home.
The rest was uneventful other than needing to clean me and my bike and gear up when I got home. Luckily I had a new set of inner chainring bolts for the XO cranks and installed the three missing bolts, washed my bike, and re-oiled the chain. Whew!
