Finally rode a road I have been wanting to explore, mile 41.5 - 48.5, Arlington School Rd which 'parallels' Old US 80. Nice road with more farm land than Old US 80.
What a great day in late May in the Phx valley. Temps never reached above 84 F and that was only in the last 2 miles! Never saw my shadow! It was overcast the whole ride. It was windy though, mostly from the south - southwest, so once I turned around at the solar farm on old US 80, it was a tailwind mostly.
Was a bit leery of this route as the last official water was at mile 28 at Control 2 and then would have to ride south to the turnaround and return to control 3 (same place as control 2) at mile 98. I believe there could be water at a new building of Stotz Dairy that appeared to be like a store. I know Mike mentioned there was a hose behind Arlington School but I never checked it out. Today was cool enough to do the 70 miles between refill with 2 bottles. Maybe can get water at mil 32ish at Bukeye Airport Also A.J.s Coop at mile 48.7 / 78.0 ( but closed on MOndays).
I chose to just ride steady, since I had not ridden any distance of 100 or more miles in over a month and a half, since April 3 the Kitt Peak 600k. In the end my butt even started to hurt. Forgot to put on my chamois cream.
It was a great day of cycling, as I consulted randoplan before hand and noted that the wind would be an asset on the return leg. Also I was tempted initially to start at Tartesso instead of the actual start. Yet I like to have the first run at a route be as it was published. In this case due to what randoplan said, I opted to keep with the original route. If one were oncerned with water, one could stash water in the car and start near the I-10 / Palo Verde/Sun Valley Pkwy, that way meaning would have access to water a bit earlier. Would have to ponder that to see if 1st go north or south and how that affects mileage to water.
