Well, another amazing day on the MTB's with best of friends out at Riverside State Park. The "Daypackers on Wheels" team this weekend consisted of Meghan, Lisa, Nick, Ron, Warren, Rob, Brandon, Phil and Brent. Normally I would provide some detail of the adventure but brother Phil laid "pen to paper" and captured the days events like only he can do! Here's the story from Phil, enjoy:
Brent, Ron, Lisa, Nick, Meghan, Warren, Phil and Ron & son Brandon (Ron is Ron Simmons' coworker at Avista) had a great ride on Saturday at Riverside State Park departing around 10:00 under cloudy, low-40's temp with a wee bit of rain in the air. Where low 40's and a light rain is positively uncomfortable on a road bike, we hardly noticed the rain on the slower speed mountain bikes and actually warmed up quickly as the ride progressed and the temperature rose to the upper 40's. The fall colors were richly displayed all around us. The trails were "just right" for traction and never wet or sloppy. We covered 21 miles and went up & down the River, high & low on the bluffs. What a jewel that park is for all of us! Diverse terrain and something for everyone.
Due to a busy week, I had not read Brent's invitational email too well and didn't get the full message on "he planned to feed us." On past rides, Brent has brought tortilla roll-ups for everyone and he is always generous with sharing food so I assumed we might have a little something post ride. We got off the bikes back at the parking lot around 2:00 under a very light rain after enjoying a challenging, supportive and beautiful fall ride with great friends. And then the magic happened. OH MY GOODNESS! Brent kicks into Tailgate Time and out comes a canopy tent to keep us out of the rain WITH a propane heater to dry the Lycra and warm the bootie. A 4-foot table gets set up with two propane stoves to grill up delicious hoagie dawgs, crisply toasted buns, and heat up a delicious chili! Oh wow...he could have stopped there but we also had 3-mustards, shredded cheese, cole slaw, 3-corn chip varieties and bottled water. I had a hoagie with all the fixin's, cole slaw and chili. And then I went back for seconds with a big plate of cole slaw and more chili. After finishing Plate #2, Brent asked if I would like another dawg (meaning just a dawg), which sounded like a perfect little topper to an already full meal deal. By the time I had turned around, he hands me another dawg on a hoagie bun with another helping of cole slaw and chili! I knew this was way too much food but...#1: I couldn't refuse my gracious host, and #2: How often do you get to overinflate your tires, I mean, stomach? This kindness by Brent went way, way past "I'm going to feed you." Seriously?? Are you kidding me??? So, So, Good. Everyone was over the top with thanks to Brent for such a terrific time. We agreed that a post-ride potluck meal would be a great tail-gater for a future mountain bike date.
I somehow managed to slip behind my steering wheel and carefully drive home with my tubeless tummy overinflated to 8400 psi. When I walked in the door, I told my wife, "Honey, I won't be eating for at least 7-days." After a hot shower, I took a 2-hour nap and woke up at 6:00 in the evening with a slight decrease in my waistline.
Brent, my very good friend, you exceeded the customer's every expectation. And we sincerely thank you!!
