DAY ONE: Most of today was spent in the woods. Out of the gate, the road disappears and the trails get steep. Soon after they get steeper. Your off-road, and it’s hard to know what’s coming up. Use your low gears and don’t get cocky. We enjoyed the few km of descending fire roads. Once back to the highway, we climbed most of the way to Stowe. We cut off to come up Pipeline, and enjoyed its technical and narrow switchbacks... uphill. The best part is as it exits onto the Von Trapp Brewery. We were glad to stop for a pint and a bite. A quick descent into Stowe, and we’re done for the day. Is the Alchemist open still?
DAY TWO: We started our morning by tightening bolts, checking pressure, and securing our load. We headed into Stowe for a coffee. On our exit we were presented with an epic climb. That wasn’t the first. We ascended and descended for a couple hours until we popped out into Morristown. Lunch at Lost Nation filled the tanks and off we were. Our challenge was to arrive at Hill Farmstead Brewery by 5pm. 700m of climbing later... we made it. It was 5:04, but they let us grab a few photos and buy some beer. Our last goal? Hit Willey’s True Value Hardware before 6. Thankfully it was all downhill. By 5:45 we had procured Smoked Salmon, Goats Cheese, Blueberries, and snacks. One more ascent and we arrived at Greensboro Historic Barn. We’re staying right in the barn. It’s a quaint little apartment, with heat, and a shower. All is well.
DAY THREE: Today we started almost right on time. We had exhausted our extra batteries. We were concerned that we didn’t have the battery life to keep GPS and photos going. We carried on to Hardwick anyway. We had breakfast at the Buffalo Mountain Co-Op. only one persons carried a USB block. We charged from 30 to 85%. That cost us an hour. Off we went. First climb? Buffalo Mountain Road. It’s a true Jeep trail with an impossible grade and large stones. It’s a couple kilometres like that before we summit and follow the ridge. A few more similar climbs finally lead to equivalent descents. Lots of fun navigating large boulders, and muddy bottoms. It felt nice to let off the brakes once in awhile. We spent much time working up and down rollers until we made it to the final descent. I expected a windy gravel road that settled into town. Instead we took a bridge laden single track descent full of rolling switchbacks and rocky descents. What a blast. We rolled by Three Penny Taproom for some grub, and then stopped into Onion River Sports for a chinwag. The last twenty k was supposed to be flat. Compared to the rest of the day... it was. We arrived back at the car with minutes until sunset. A good day and a good trip. Sad it’s over.
