Rick and I rode the Underground Railroad in South Jersey permanent route today, June 19th. The previous two years it was a brevet event put on by the New Jersey Randonneurs, with about a dozen riders. The route visits a number of historic sites, including 4 churches that were havens for escapees who came across the Delaware Bay from the slave states. The weather forecast was for high temps, and the feels-like temps went from 70F at our 7am start, to 91F at our 1pm finish. Not too bad. And the wind cooperated, coming from the SSW at only 4-6mph, aiding our return to the Gibbstown start. Saw fields of peppers, squash, soybeans, golden wheat, and corn of various heights, including some near ready for picking, judging by their tasseled tops. Saw milkweed, mimosa and day lilies in bloom. Happened to meet up with fellow SJW club member Gary, also out on a ride, at the Othello post office house (altho I noticed the owners have removed the sign). Thanks to more bridge-out work detour on Swedesboro - Paulsboro Road, we got exactly one bonus mile today. On the Spesh Roubaix.
