Rode over to the closed race track with another fellow. I didn't understand the format, so I gave it too much gas, too early. I did ask how long the track was, so I took the 1st lap, but then the guys kept riding, and riding, and riding.... I didn't realize it was 1 hour of cycling followed by 6 laps to place! Anyway, I was doing okay - middle of the peloton, and then there was a crash ahead of me. I stopped to assist and direct traffic. By the time that was done, I figured there was no way to catch the peloton for the last 15 minutes or so ( 6 laps), so pulled off. Good thing, too, as it turns out I had a slow leak on the front tire - it was completely flat by the time the rest of the guys finished. I must have pinched the new tube when I put it in after replacing this morning's flat... Me and tubes, I tell you...
There was another crash on the other side of the track while I was waiting. Was a bit aggressive out there. About 90 guys mostly (~6 girls?). We were followed by more serious riders at 3 p.m., including a few pros and the guy (Daniel Gebru) who won the gold medal at the Paralympic Games last week (2 guys crashed out with a meter to go and he came along and scooped up the win for gold!). Pretty cool.
Good fun, but not entirely sure it's my thing. The other guys seem to think I need to have a higher cadence for these races and that I'm wasting a lot of energy on lower cadence power. Whatever.
Set a new best personal record for best time for 40 km again - this time it was 1 hour 5 minutes 30 seconds. But that was in a peloton, so I'm pretty happy to have 1 hour 7 minutes 59 seconds from my solo ride earlier in the morning.
Used the lap/split function - lap 1 was the ride over to the track, lap 2 was a practice ride around the track, lap 3 was the race itself, I don't know what happened with laps 4
