IMO, This is the best way to ride Pinhoti P1, P2 and P3 plus include Bear Creek. You can park just outside Bear Creak on the side of Gates Chapel Road and get a good 2 mile gravel rd warm up before climbing P1, or, drive up to the dirt lot right at the start of the singletrack and only have a 1/4 mile warm up before starting P1.
The P's range from smooth to technical with varying doses of roots and rocks. P1 has some of the steepest climbs in the route but the descent is a riot ending at a creek crossing. The remainder of P1 is mostly doubletrack to Wilderness Road. Turn left after passing the barricade and the right 1/4 mi down the road to begin P2. The first half of the P2 climb is gravel and 2nd half is single/double track. After the gravel part, your trail is a right turn behind the Road Closed barricade. The P2 descent is long, fast, technical and furious with a few short steep ups along the way and plenty of opportunities to embed yourself in a tree if you're not paying attention. P2 ends abruptly at Conasauga rd. Be careful not to go blasting out across the road. There are cars from time to time heading to Mulberry Gap. Take a right and up the road until you see the Pinhoti sign on the left. P3 is the longest of the P's with the most climbing on the way out but the climbing is broken up with a couple fun DH sections. SR 52 is at the end of P3. At this point you, the Cohutta Overlook is about 1/4 mile down the road to your left and it's worth a look if you've never seen it.
After descending P3 back to Conasauga Rd, turn left and head towards Mulberry Gap Mountain Bike Getaway. You can reload here with water or whatever you need. They can help with repairs, food, drink and even camping or a cabin if needed. Or, continue on to Old CCC Camp Road and begin the climb to the Bear Creek Overlook parking area. This is a long boring gravel climb so just settle in with a comfortable gear and plan to spin away for the next 4.3 miles and don't forget to hydrate. There are a couple sites along the way. At the 3.4 mile mark is the Barnes Creek Falls just 100 feet off the road. At the 4.1 mile mark is the Bear Creek Overlook. This is the best view of the mountains along this road so take a look, take a drink and finish the last of the climb before beginning the decent.
The Bear Creek descent will start fast and fun and you will soon pass just above the Barnes Creek Falls that you passed on the way up. There will be some rolling up and down for the next mile before getting back on the technical, fast singletrack for the final descent which will last about 4 miles. The end of the trail includes several creek crossings that vary from brief splash through to wider and deeper sections that will get you fairly wet but you car is not far away at this point so enjoy it as a free bike wash. You will pass the Gannett Poplar (Georgia's 2nd tallest tree) about a mile from the end. This is a popular hiking destination so at his point you need to be away of hikers and dogs on the trail. At the end of the singletrack, if you parked on Gates Chapel Road, you still have 2 miles to go and a little bit of uphill but your definitely in the home stretch of a good strong ride.
