I wanted to ride outside but that wasn't going to happen and I definitely wanted to do 40 miles today. So I then had to decide how I was going to challenge myself to do one of my longest indoor rides . I anticipated I would do and average speed of 17-17.5 mph for the 40 miles based on all the other indoor rides especially on the Kurt Fluid Trainer. After completing my newsletter articles about indoor training and workouts I want to do something with a bang. I decided I wanted to do some hill training and paceline work all indoors. I had seen some nice race team training rides on You Tube was impressed with them. So it was only logical to follow them on the Kurt Kinetic Fluid Trainer. The first one was 1 hr 15 min. with a several long climbs of 2-7 percent grade that were 10-15 min in length. I basically followed the camera guy and used the riders in front to judge speed and effort. It was really nice just like doing a real ride with other riders. The first session was kick ass so I thought. I struggle to keep pace as if it was a real group ride, part of the ride was in a rapid rotating paceline with 5 riders the hill portion was basically every rider for himself. One ride did most of the pulling as other riders would pick up the slack as the pulling rider would start to fade. Everyone actually did some work to keep the pace moving fast. After 20 miles I had an average of 18.7 mph but there was a mile 1/2 cool down which brought that session overall average down to 18.1 mph not bad for all the climbing. I used the gearing to give the climb resistant and I tried to maintain a 90 RPM cadence. I was beat and really ready to call it quit but that wasn't the plan.
I loaded the next ride which was another race team fast rotating paceline this time there were like 12 riders. This ride about 54 minutes but I only needed 18.5 miles to get my 40 miles. I was ready and started the ride but right out of the gate I realized that I was not going to be able to keep up on the Kurt Kinetic Fluid Trainer. It was time to pull out the Rollers. So I got everything set up and started the ride on the trainer. It took me the entire warm up to get used to the rollers and be straight. I had to figure out which gear to used to follow the group. On this ride there was ride gauges setup with RPM, Speed, Distance, Time, Watts and a few other things. I was able to set the gears, cadence and speed to match the ride. It was a fast ride and kicked my ass. I thought I was sweating on the hill ride, I sweated three times more on this ride, I had to really dig deep to keep up and not get dropped as they really kicked up the pace the last 9 miles. I know it was a fake ride but I rode it as if it was real a little imagination goes a long ways. When I finished my portion of the they by coincidence their ride was finished too and they started their cool down. I know to get my average from 18.1 to 20 I had to average over 22 mph. The ride gauge said the ride averaged 24 mph, I don't think it counted their warm up which was 16-18 then 18-20 then finally to their ride pace. The ride pace seemed to be around 22-23 on average the slow pace was 20-21 which was the drifting line. I was really happy to have finished with the group. I then went out to complete my ride, it was cold as all out there. Any water on the road was frozen as it was all day, luckily the center of the road was dry. Tomorrow recovery time.
