Headed to the coast to escape the heat and Sonny wanted to go to Dad's anyway. Bob suggested getting there in a different way via Pescadero.
Page Mill wasn't too bad this morning. Hardly any cars and it was a bit cloudy so it wasn't too hot either. Once we started descending W. Alpine, we could see the coast was socked in with a thick marine layer and it was actually a little chilly.
As we got closer to Pescadero, the wind picked up as well. We stopped for a little snack and once we got going again, we were in the fog, wind, and cold all the way up to Dad's. The whole way up I debated whether to put the jacket on but didn't end up putting it on until we got to lunch.
On the way up, I don't remember why, but I was talking to Bob about how much I like pork belly and the special today was pork belly, which I had to get. It was so good and really hit the spot. The fried banana pudding dessert was great too.
We couldn't fill up water and use the restrooms in downtown HMB because of some horse/cowboy show going on so we went to the restrooms on Higgins Canyon. Since we were already there, we decided to check out the road closure to see if it was passable. There's a big sign board at the start of Higgins Canyon that says the road is closed but when we got to the washout, it was fully repaired and opened. I suspect they'll announce its reopening soon.
Of course, now that meant we had to climb Higgins Canyon (from the steep side) instead of enjoying the tailwind down Hwy 1. At least we didn't have to deal with the cars or the clouds and cold.
There were more cars than usual on Tunitas because Hwy 84 was closed due to a down tree and/or power line. Ran into Marshall and his friends at the top.
While descending Kings, I heard the roar of a fighter jet and then through the trees I saw a F-22 Raptor. No idea where it was heading or why it was in the area but cool to see.
We were pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as hot as we were expecting once we got back down into the valley.
