Well after 3 days of using public transport to get to work I was really looking forward to getting back on the bike for the Sunday ride now the thaw was well underway.
I checked the website for details – Ride cancelled due to inimical weather conditions! Surely some mistake made by our esteemed overworked webmaster a simple cutting and pasting error from earlier in the week.
I arrived at Uxbridge where Jim had also turned up assuming that the same error had occurred.
But NO! These mollycoddled delicate precious flowers – Lily-livered Lawrie and Bambie the bolt would not venture out even though the snow had all but gone and the temperature was +5C.
In my day we used to ride out in sub-zero temperatures, though blizzards, gales, swarms of locusts and torrential rain. This new generation of snowflake leaders would have had a humiliating dressing down from Beryl and put on back-marker duties for a month for such a blatant dereliction of duty.
I went off in search of this “inimical weather” as far as Wendover only stopping briefly to remove a layer of clothing and to put on lighter gloves. I found absolutely no evidence of it.
Needless to say I have registered my outrage at the highest level and expect a full enquiry.
This turn of events did give me the opportunity to plan the route for my ride lead next Sunday. As the 11th is Mothering Sunday all the pubs in Wendover were asking for precise numbers and deposit for each person before booking. I don’t know how many of my fair-weather cycling buddies/wimps will be up for the challenge so we will have to take a chance.
