Farley 9.6. Clear blue skies until later in the ride, warm and somewhat humid, dry trails with almost no winds, so I was thoroughly sweaty and dusty by the end of the ride. A beautiful Summer day in Wisconsin and fortunately a large portion of the trail runs through woods, so lots of shade.
I saw probably 18-20 Side by Sides and 4 wheelers plus a couple of motorcycles, but no other cyclists. With the lack of wind it got very dusty whenever an ATV passed from either direction. It's definitely better to ride this trail during the week, as weekends have 10X the ATV traffic.
The fat bike was a good choice for the terrain. Most of it was fine but there are some loose sections where the wider tires came in handy. You could ride this on a gravel bike but I'd go with larger tires in the 44 to 46 MM range. Surprising amount of climbing even though most of that was railroad grade. The last 10 miles or so was predominantly uphill.
I departed from Twining Park (overnight parking approved by the Monroe Park District) in Monroe just before 10 am and pulled into Mineral Point around 2:45 pm with 4:15 ride time. I had a nice cold cider at Cow Tipper's (formerly Tony's, who retired earlier in the year), then headed over to the Walker House for a shower before dinner. I had to pack everything for the trip into my bike bags and my hydration pack, so a very tight fit and a good amount of weight to carry, and of course I had to wash my kit for tomorrow's ride.
It was fun being in Mineral Point again after a few years. I was the only guest at the Walker House and they gave me the run of the place for early check-in. Dinner was at the Commerce Street Brewery, which always has great food. I was pretty tired so turned in early around 9 pm. Slept like a log with AC and an overhead ceiling fan. This was officially the longest mileage ride on the fat bike.
