Starting on Leialoha Street in Haiku, this cycling journey took me through some of Maui's most breathtaking landscapes, blending the charm of rural Hawaii with the rugged beauty of the island's coastline. I begin my ride by heading east along Hana Highway (Route 360), where the road gently winds through lush forests, with the occasional glimpse of the ocean peeking through the trees.
As I go further, the road begins to curve more dramatically, hugging the cliffsides with dramatic drop-offs and panoramic ocean views. The air is filled with the sweet scent of tropical flowers and the earthy aroma of rain-soaked soil, typical of Maui's windward side.
Passing through the small, picturesque communities of Huelo and Kailua, you’ll notice the vegetation becoming denser and more vibrant, with ferns, bamboo, and towering trees forming a green tunnel around you. The road narrows as you approach the halfway point, by Twin Falls
Continuing on, the road to Ke‘anae becomes increasingly challenging, with sharp turns, steep climbs, and narrow bridges demanding your full attention and skill. But the reward is worth it. As you reach Ke‘anae Peninsula, the landscape opens up to reveal taro fields, historic churches, and the crashing waves of the Pacific against the jagged black lava rock coastline. Camp Ke‘anae, nestled within this serene setting, offers a perfect spot to rest, reflect, and refuel.
After taking in the peaceful ambiance of Ke‘anae, it's time to retrace your route back towards Haiku. The return journey offers a different perspective, with the late afternoon sun casting golden hues over the landscape, transforming the familiar scenery into something entirely new.
The ride culminates as i arrive back at my home in Haiku, legs tired but spirit uplifted by the day's adventure. This out-and-back route from Haiku to Camp Ke‘anae and back is not just a physical challenge, but a soulful experience, immersing you in the natural beauty and cultural richness.
