A text from Chloe before 6am to say they were on their way, prompted me to get a move on.
As soon as there was enough light I set off.
It started with some nice rail trail along the inlet then headed inland. Not a great deal of climbing. I met Neville on the way down.
He was looking flushed.
He said that Eathan had just passed through.
There was one more hill then all rail trail. I was thinking I might have to slow down as I thought I'd get there before the family. Until I called.
They were 50km out of Albany!
That spurred me on a bit.
Then there was a bit of road, with traffic.
Most people were OK, but there was one 4x4 that slowed right down to wait for a car to pass coming the other way.
So I waved to thank them.
But bizzarly, once the road was clear, they skimmed my elbow anyway!
Then we turned on to side road which was quieter.
Across the railway track again (I'd been held up earlier while a predictably long freight train passed).
And for some reason I don't understand (like the re-alignment at quinninup) we turn away from the finish point to do one more hill, & zig zag our way through the streets back down to the terminus.
As I passed above the old station I was looking down to see if I could see the kids.
I couldn't. But I could see another rider.
Pulling up I said "hi, Eathan?".
He seemed quite taken aback, that I knew who he was, but I'd been chasing him for a few days.
He'd stayed somewhere along the route between Denmark & Albany.
And tomorrow, he is walking home along the Bibbulmun.
What a hero!
After a bit of confusion as to why the family weren't here, I saw the note on the southern terminus signs saying the tourist information place had moved!
And we were to sign off there.
Eathan rode up the hill, & the family came down.
Sophie was super excited to see me, & just about knocked me over.
The must do photos done, we drove up to the information center, where I apparently just missed Femke.
Never mind, I hear a shower, and beer calling me :-)
