For the INTENDED route, see https://ridewithgps.com/routes/24358214, BUT NOTE THAT THIS RIDE INCLUDED: 1) TWO UP-&-BACKS TO FERN’S HOUSE; 2) TURNAROUND AT CROWN VALLEY PKWY AFTER JK BENT BOTH WHEELS BY HITTING A ROCK AT 48 MPH; 3) EXTRA CREDIT DOWN-&-BACK ON COAST HWY NEAR THE END OF THE RIDE TO GET TO 100 TOTAL MILES.
Similar to 02-17-18 at https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2504833706, EXCEPT FOR THE CHANGES NOTED ABOVE.
Fern Kissel (miles 12.9–82.5) & JK.
Park/start/finish at Carlsbad/Poinsettia Coaster Station, 6511 Avenida Encinas, Carlsbad, CA 92009 (see https://goo.gl/maps/GVV8HcBXeVB2 ).
Lap 1: South from Carlsbad-Poinsettia Station, N along the coast to Oceanside Harbor and east to Fern’s house to meet her.
North through Camp Pendleton & into San Clemente. “Extra credit” down-&-back to San Clemente State Beach for ~1 mile/100' ascent, then continued N through San Clemente residential tract.
North on El Camino Real, then “extra credit” E & N on Camino Capistrano for additional ~0.75 mile/150' ascent, & SW down Palisades Dr to/through Doheny Beach. NE up Street Of The Golden Lantern, N on Pacific Coast Hwy, up Crown Valley Pkwy & Pacific Island Dr (adds 5 miles/870' ascent), & back down Pacific Island Dr WHERE I GLANCED AT MY 48.5 MPH DOWNHILL SPEED & SIMULTANEOUSLY RAN OVER A ROCK? (ROCKS?) SO HARD THAT THE FRONT TIRE BLEW OUT & BOTH WHEELS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED. EVEN WITH THE TOTALLY FLAT FRONT TIRE, I COULDN’T GET THE BIKE TO STOP UNTIL I GOT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL AT CROWN VALLEY PKWY.
I changed the front tube (the front tire showed no sign of damage!). The back wheel was so bent that it wouldn’t rotate until I opened the brakes & backed out the cable, leaving the rear brakes only marginally usable. When we tried to roll, the front brake was making a loud, rhythmic “BAM” whenever applied, so we stopped again & discovered that the front wheel was so damaged that when the front brake was even minimally applied, a bulge in the wheel would bang into the brake shoe every rotation, making the front brake unusable. We decided to turn south & head back, instead of continuing north to Laguna Beach Subway as originally planned.
Lap 2: South along the coast where Fern was stung by a bee in San Clemente, then had a near head-on collision with an inattentive rider on Old Pacific Hwy (!). We survived to continue south through Camp Pendleton and east to Fern’s house; then I headed back to the coast & added a little “extra credit” south on Coast Hwy to a u-turn at Captain Keno’s near Encinitas Blvd., in order to extend the ride to 100 miles. All’s well that ends well (until I had to pay the bill for a new set of wheels the next day).

Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
