I didn't leave all that early because I would be heading west and indeed the traffic on 34 was very light and fast riding. Took the paved way west rather than use Bethel road which only required a mile or two of 34 riding in Heard county and it wasn't too bad. It's a bit faster and shorter than the gravel shortcut and as long as i'm early enough it's pretty deserted.
I wound my way through on mostly gravel to Rock Mills and then Roanoke where I was very ready to stop for the first time around mile 85. This one still had the self checkouts going but the cashier needed to tap the screen for payment. So that was nice. I felt much better after a coke and loading up on snacks and got back going on mostly gravel heading in the direction of Chambers county.
Eventually I approached West Point lake where I rode a dead end cove road that was almost entirely in GA but had to be accessed from AL. Rode all the subdivisions near the Chattahoochee on 109, many of which had steep and long hills. The real challenge of the day was riding the remaining trails that I had not already ridden at Pyne park. I made a little loop through the boat ramp part of the park and by a new conservation center called Oakfuskee right on the water. The part of the park with the campground had a gate up on both sides and so I didn't ride through there. It looked like maybe it was full so perhaps that's why.
The trails were quite blown out by horses and super dry and full of leaf and needle and small stick debris, and in addition they were old school style, steep and full of lots of large exposed roots. I was pretty pooped and not really having the greatest time but I managed. I took a very short break by the lake to refresh my mind and body a bit, and then pressed on to the Dollar General across from the trailhead. I only saw one lady on a horse otherwise it was deserted.
I was feeling better again after the stop and the route afterward was pretty easy. I had a southwest tailwind most of the time so that also propelled me faster. I stopped for the last time in Grantville at the DG in downtown. I rode a few more subdivisions in Coweta as the sun went down. Rode beside lots of bats out gathering their evening meal. The temperature stayed pretty warm after the sun dropped but I was very glad it wasn't 80 anymore. It never really felt all that hot but it was definitely warmer than I would have liked. Quite a temperature swing on the day as well. I started out in arm and knee warmers and gloves with the temperature around 48-52 for the first few hours of the day. It warmed up from there to the low eighties. But since it is mid October the trees blocked the sun most of the time on tree lined roads.
Riding through to Senoia on a slightly different way than usual worked out pretty well. I used the path system on the southwest side of town which was nice. Decided once again to use Dividend instead of the paths because I like avoiding golf carts and it's pretty deserted at night. Needed a couple miles to get to 206 so I zig zagged a bit and then rolled in feeling very tired but not all that bad. I managed my eating and drinking pretty well on this ride. But overall I felt a tiny bit fatigued, perhaps from the efforts of the trip to DC.
