The Final Countdown
The end was in sight, and I was both elated and sad. While I embarked on this journey to raise funds for a good cause, I gained so much more than I ever expected. One of the biggest personal wins came from posting videos of myself talking on social media for the first time. The positive feedback helped me develop my public speaking skills, a challenge I've struggled with for years.
After attending two public speaking courses to overcome my chronic anxiety, I never really had a platform to practise. But this experience gave me that push. Putting myself out there on video was daunting, but it encouraged me to continue doing more. This journey wasn’t just about cycling or raising funds—it was about pushing past my limits and growing in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
Scott Galloway, a prominent business professor and entrepreneur, often mentions that storytelling is a vital skill for success, whether through public speaking or on social media. By sharing my adventure, I not only helped raise awareness for animal welfare but also found my voice as a storyteller. The feedback I received fueled my confidence to keep going, proving that even the most uncomfortable risks can lead to personal growth.
The Vioolsdrift Border Post is a key border crossing between Namibia and South Africa, situated along the Orange River. Located approximately 25 kilometres from the town of Noordoewer in Namibia and about 40 kilometres from the South African town of Vioolsdrift, this border post serves as a vital gateway for travellers and trade between the two countries.
I crossed the border with little fanfare, greeted by the familiar slow-moving bureaucracy that only immigration officers seem to master.
As Rocky's Ride drew to a close, I was filled with gratitude for the incredible people who helped make this journey possible. From those who offered their support to the kindness of strangers, each gesture fueled me through the toughest days.
The wild landscapes I called home during nights of wild camping provided more than shelter; they offered space for reflection, resilience, and growth. The hardships I faced along the way—battling heat, isolation, and exhaustion—became the fire that strengthened my spirit. T
This adventure has been about more than just the kilometres covered. It’s a story of community, endurance, and the power of purpose. I carry with me not only memories of breathtaking horizons but also a deeper understanding of my own strength and the boundless generosity of others. Together, we’ve made a difference—for the animals, for each other, and for the world we share.
