I found a roofing nail in my tire the other day when I returned home. Thanks to tubeless it didn't affect my ride, but I still didn't like to find it. So today, I attached a broom to my bike and wore heavy gloves. I thought I'd mostly clean tire scraps and those pesky tire wires (which are everywhere), but I found countless nails, screws, metal pieces, saw blades, box cutter blades, and broken glass pieces all combined inside the gravel on the 10ft wide shoulder. The worst area was between the NV/AZ birder and the last turnaround spot in AZ. I figure that the AZ govt street sweeper maybe doesn't want to go into NV so they turn around there. That was the worst part, but the other parts look like it's been 10 years anyway. Some debris was cooked into the tar! I'll finish this by the end of 2024. It took longer than I planned and I only covered half my route, but I think it was worth it for my future riding enjoyment on this route which is one of my favorites. I looked into the AZ highway site trying to find out how to get a sweeper but actually it probably won't get those small screws and nails anyway.
