Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.

As I have been planning for the past week. I've decided to do the Caliente Loop. I planned it for the weekend, as there is less traffic. I was taking note of the weather report. Predicted in the low 80's. That was good enough for me. I did the usual morning routine. Fed, prepared my provisions, took a nap. Got my gear in the car and headed to Caliente. I arrived in good time. No traffic problems. I quickly got my gear together, and headed out. The legs were a bit heavy to start, so I took it easy for the first few miles to let them warmup. In the meantime, I was thinking what I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to know how my constitution would hold up, my legs cramping, feeding, hydrating. The first climb was brutal, as it usually is. It was warmer this time than the previous time. By about 5 degrees, by my estimation. I kept telling myself to stay calm, knowing I had a lot to cover after the climb. I knew the climb would end at around 1:10ish hours into the ride. The 36x32 saved my hide on more than one situation. The legs didn't feel great, but they were energetic enough to last. I was able to make the ascension without stopping. Definitely a confidence booster. (However, how many matches did I burn, and did I have enough to last)? After making the summit, I pulled over, took a few moments to recoup, took some photos. Then headed down into the valley. The valley is desolate. At this point, it was mostly concentration that got me through. I was constantly doing a body/mind check. I needed to make sure I wasn't going to bonk, or drift too far in the mind (as that detract from the needed focus). When I was a few miles from the summit (fire station), I was thinking about feeding, bio, and such. I had to stop about 1.5 miles from the summit, as the battery on my GoPro depleted. I pulled over and replaced the battery. Taking no more than 2 minutes. I took that moment to stretch a bit and refill bottles (I had a spare on the fork). I then commenced the climb. I knew the climb was brief and steep. So, the pain required was manageable. When I reached the summit, I pulled over. Being the greater of all rest stops. I decided to feed. I hardly ate 1/4 of the power bar. I wasn't exhibiting signs of bonking, or anywhere near. I told myself that if I felt any signs, I would pull over and finish the bar. (I ended up finishing without the need to feed a second time). I think I did a quick equipment check, then headed downhill. The wind had picked up. The descent wasn't very safe. I don't think I reached much faster than 39MPH. The wind was pushing me all around. My morale lifted up a bit. Knowing that the remainder of the ride was downhill. I was constantly thinking about the muscles. I needed to stretch often to keep then supple. When I reached the mini-cafe, I did a quick provision and bio check. I had enough and no need to bio, so I continued. The miles ticked over very quick. The scenery helped stave off the loneliness. There were more cattle this time around. Some of which, were on the road and lacking fear of my passing by. At this point, I was doing occasional distance checks. I knew how much time it would take, given the average speed. When I reached the fork, I was on the last leg of the ride. The legs were sore, but not cramping. I kept the tempo nice and steady. No stomping on the pedals. I calculated the provisions, spot on. I had enough to last and probably enough, should there been a mishap (ie flat tire). Shortly after, I arrived at the start point. My car was still there (thank goodness no one towed it). I cleaned up, put on some clothes, and had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Much deserved. Concentration was good. Some places less than others, but overall I made it safe, no gremlins worthy of mention. Balance and form felt good. Ailments, quad soreness towards the end of the ride, and the usual sense of exhaustion. Gear worked great. There was a mis-shift, going into the spokes. Fortunately, I was able to shift it back into the sprockets. Other notes, there was one cyclist just finishing his ride as I was about to depart. I used the Glympse tracking app this time, will have to confirm with the folks to determine its effectiveness.
