Sabino Canyon in the early AM is fantastic! There were hikers on this brand new pavement yet it was easy to navigate. I guess I should recall that the previous day I had cramps was was very concerned that I could not complete this ride. I decided I would see what the night and morning brought.
No cramps at night, clear urine. Got a breakfast croissant from Jack-ine Box, bc of course Chik-fil-a is closed on SUnday.
Off we set to Sabino. Again Mike was strong. So I fell off early as we approached Sabino. I knew I still was unsure of my legs and did not want to risk going too hard.
Sabino done, and no challenges. Down to the water stop before turning up for the 30 mile climb. I took my Nalgene 1 liter bottle in my saddle back and filled all 3 bottles. Yes I used all 3 before getting to Palisades VC area at mile 19.5. There at the Bigelow Trail Trailhead just diagonal downhill from VC were to outhouses and a water spigot that I had not seen before. So refilled water there.
The aspens were soon to greet me as I proceeded uphill. I had never been up to see the aspen in full splendor! What a joy. Took a bunch of pics.
Then the 3 miles 1,200 ft climbing from Summerhaven to top of Ski Hill was a next! What a challenge, yet there were reds, oranges, and yellows everywhere. After reaching Iron Door restaurant area, I started the really step 1.6 mile part. about 0.3 miles up was a gate gate and a cheering section! Fun. Then I was continued uphill , they passed me and cheered more. Guess what, those 4-5 people were up at the top gate waiting for me and cheering as I approached. One gal asked if she could take my picture! Fun stuff.
Then back to Summerhaven where Mike had us go out to Marshall Gulch and then take a back way neighborhood street out of Summerhaven up to Loma Linda area! Very nice. Finally some quiet car-free riding. Refilled water again at Begilow Trailhead.
Downhill ride was fantastic! Made it down to McDonalds where I got a Powerade and ate half my waffle / almond butter I had brought along.
Sunset now. Then for the hurried trip out to Saguaro Nat Park east side to do the loop before they close the gate! Mike had texted that they close the gate at 8:30, yet I did not trust it to always be so. I got there and hustled my way around. Fun, in the dark. The lights of Tucson, the lights on the cactus. No critters out. That 1.7 mile climb on the loop was stout.
I made it out of the Park in time!
Now for the easy ride back to the finish.
All in all it seemed cooler today, the colors at the top were awesome. More cars than I had experienced before on the way up. Another great Mt Lemmon climb is done.
