Our group departed Meeniyen (elevation 144’ asl) for Leongatha (elevation 289’ asl) and return. Rail stops included Meeniyen Station, Tarwin siding, Koonwarra siding, and Leongatha Station. The rail route crossed the Tarwin Bridge and passed through highway underpasses before stopping at the Ethical Food Store in Koonwarra for coffee. The coffee and service were efficient, but it was noisy. The Tarwin Wetland and Black Spur Creek Wetland Reserves are recognized by the Tarwin Valley Landcare group as bird monitoring sites. We visited the Lennie Gwyther Statue, commemorating a 10-year-old boy who rode solo to Sydney for the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
