I participated in my eleventh consecutive Bike the Drive. I left my Fairmont Hotel room at 5:09 a.m., was out in front of the hotel at 5:14, and started riding at 5:16. I took Columbus to Randolph to Michigan Avenue sidewalk to the starting point at Jackson and Lake Shore Drive. I arrived early, so I photographed the rising Sun (an orange ball) at 5:22 and then returned to the queue.
Riding onto Lake Shore Drive at 5:35, I headed south and rode to the southernmost point of the loop at the Museum of Science and Industry rest stop (at 6:08). I resumed riding at 6:21, passed Soldier Field at 6:49, the start line at 6:56, then rode to the northernmost point of the loop at Bryn Mawr rest stop at 7:38. I resumed riding at 8:00, rode south to the Grant Park rest stop at 8:42, the start line at 8:58, and then continued north once again, turning around at Belmont Avenue at 9:24. I finally completed my ride at Butler Field at 9:54.
This was the warmest Bike the Drive I've yet ridden. It was 74 degrees with essentially no wind when I started, and the temperature rose under a clear sky to 88 by ride's end. [In 2012, the daytime high temperature would exceed that of today's high, but the temperatures during the 2018 ride were about 5 degrees warmer than in 2012]. I wore Castelli shorts, my white SS jersey, and LG gloves. I stopped a number of times to take photos and video clips with my iPhone 7 and also took numerous photos on my bike with Canon camera.

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
