Day 10, probably our best day. Temp was fine, low to mid 50s, elevation was pretty level, sun was out, and little to no wind. In addition, we finally found a paved section of the Erie Canal trail and it took us through Rochester without ever having to ride on a road or highway in the city, great for biking. We were essentially the only ones on the trail.
So other than one wrong turn, as seen in the route profile, it was a great day. Started out nice as we found the Chill & Grill in Palmyra. This is an infamous ice cream place and although we got there too early to partake, we found it and photographed it.
Next I found my first real hot dog stand in Macedon. It was a truck right along the road, Gary's Dog N It. He was passionate about his business, has both a unique hot dog, Zweigle's made since 1880 only in Rochester, and a special recipe, the Dog Pile. I'm not certain of everything in it, but it has 7 toppings including chili and sauerkraut, magnificent. Gary gets 4.5 out of 5 stars.
We made it to Pittsford, yuppy little town, but listened to Garmin and also my own evidence of the direction we needed to take and consequently went the wrong way for round trip of 5 miles!! But when we returned to Pittsford some folks asked us in to Lock 32 brewery for drinks and lunch. It is a new business and they were very interested in our trip and paid for a root beer on tap for me and two beers for Chris. Good food as well, take out from the place across the street.
The canal trail became paved in Pittsford and we rode it all the way to the other side of Rochester, it was great!! The canal through Rochester is impressive, it is carved through rock. Got some nice picture of the canal today, see photos. We even rode on some of the unpaved sections of the trail today. Little tough, but not bad.
From Rochester on we stayed near the canal on side streets as much as we could eventually returning to state bike route 5 on state rout 31 west. Stopped in Brockport for a Perry's ice cream and then traveled to Gaines NY to stay at the Tillman Valley Inn, an old Inn with great rooms and great food. Decided to partake in a full meal this evening, it was excellent and deserved given we went 75 miles today.
50 miles to Niagara tomorrow. Meeting up with Di, Dog, and My Mother-in-law. Will take Sunday off.
Breakfast - hotel food
Lunch - Coal Tower in Pittsford, real good. Drinks at Lock 32 Brewery also very good.
Dinner - Tillman Valley Inn, fantastic and reasonable.
Tip for the day - don't throw the Garmin in the canal no matter how made you get at it!!
