We were a small group with three bikes and three trikes. We trail headed at the Mt. Vernon train station. Unfortunately the building was locked. So much for “public” restrooms. We rolled west but hadn’t gone far when we met Larry and Christine riding from Sunbury to Glenmont. That’s a 108 mile round trip so we didn’t hold them up long.
The weather was spectacular. After a stormy week, the weather gods smiled upon us with temperatures in mid to upper 70s and a steady 12-15 mph breeze blowing from the West. The trail is mostly tree covered except for the high point and the drag strip section.
The trail from Mt. Vernon west is a fairly constant 1-2% grade up to the high point (see below). From there the trail proceeds downhill to Centerburg and two miles beyond to its current end at SR 104, Huffman Road. This is a distance of 15.5 miles and with a few necessary side trips we did a respectful 32 miles - our longest this season. The downhill run back with a good tailwind was a joy.
Lunch at Jake’s was as usual, great.
