This took about 3 days to complete. I say three days because it was two full days and two half days.
Day 1 (Phoenix To Sun City) was boring.. just getting out of town for 35 miles and stayed at a friend’s house.
Day 2 (Sun City to Salome Mountain) was 77-ish miles of deep sand, washboards, hills and a general loathing about the terrain.
Day 3 (Solome Mountain to Parker) was 48 miles through THE WORST sandy garbage of a trail I’ve ever experienced. With the threat of not having enough water to get me through the final 22 miles into Parker, I finally bummed several bottles from some Jeepy boys passing by.
Day 4 (Parker to Havasu) was 25+ miles of gusty 50mph headwind all day. Slowed my progresse enough I was literally stopped while going down hill.
Scoottér picked me up with 11 miles to go before Havasu and I couldn’t be more happy with getting that crap over with! I was planning on going all the way to Laughlin NV but the storm is still raging and the dust is insane. If I didn’t have an exit already planned, I would have pushed on to Havasu piper and got a hotel room and waited the wind out.
I'd avoid this route between Aguila and Parker. Going up and over the Salome Mountains and on Alamo Road through the desert is a death march unless you enjoy pushing your bike through angle+ deep sand. In this case, I'd take the I-60 shoulder through Salome (KOA campground there with showers, power and shelters). The I-60 seems intimidating, but the shoulder is pretty wide in most areas (except for a couple bridges where you can time your crossing when there is a gap in the vehicles)
The headwinds are gnarly in the afternoons in that area, so if you can get on the road in the AM and plan on getting to your destination by 3PM you'll be the better for it.
My route was supposed to take me all the way through to Laughlin Nevada, but the headwinds on Monday and Tuesday were 15+ mph sustained and 50 mph gusts. At one point, on the north side of the lake getting to Lake Havasu City, I was going 5 mph going DOWN a 3% grade hill. You had to peddle hard hard the whole time to make any progress and the wind was bitterly cold. I ended up calling it about 12 miles before my destination in Lake Havasu City because I couldn't handle the wind anymore. The trip stopped being fun.
The ride between Parker and Lake Havasu City (via the California side of the Colorado River > Over Parker Dam > I-95 was actually lovely though. If the weather cooperated, and the sand wasn't so diabolical, I'd be all over this route every year.
