Paul B gave Peter W and me a lift back from Marion to the start in Borne. Peter and I snagged our bikes and dropped our bags for transport to Provincetown.
It was a foggy day all the way to the rest stop in Brewster at 8am or so. When the fog lifted, it was a spectacularly beautiful, cloudless day.
Note to self: must start Day 2 no later than 5am. We left at 5:15am and it seemed to take an interminable time to get across the Borne Bridge and onto the Cape Cod Canal bike path. I wasn't the best behaved, scooting up the left side outside of the cones, but I wanted to get moving. Did manage to get on a spirited group on the Canal trail, so we started moving.
Paul rode with Peter and me to the first rest stop in Barnstable. It was fun to ride with him again.
When we weren't getting snagged behind cars on main roads, we were moving at a good clip. Between Brewster to Wellfleet we got integrated into a very fast paceline with riders from the Huckleberry's, the people that originated the Day Zero ride in about 1997 or 1999. They were very strong and one rider (Steven) didn't want me to do anything but be on the back. But another rider gave me a chance and I proved my worth. Man, it was fast and hard, but we moved well together.
Just before the Brewster rest stop we rolled past "Da Hedge", the hedge-lined Cape Cod Sea Camps with 100's of screaming kids and adults, cheering you on. Knowing they are there for a respite from their cancer treatments in the city brings tears to my eyes. Again, another strong motivation no matter how you are feeling.
However, when we rolled into the Wellfleet rest stop, I knew I had burned a lot of matches on that section. Peter and I decided to back it down quite a bit after that. We left the rest stop relatively quickly and there seemed to be almost no one on the road, which made it very pleasant to ride, not having to worry about too many other riders.
The section on the rail trail is very pleasant, no stress, I was mostly riding tempo on the front of a short low-key paceline. Legs were feeling the fatigue.
Then my favorite part of Day 2: the rail trail ends and we head east to Ocean View Drive on the Atlantic beach side. Mercifully, the fact that we'd had fog meant that there almost no wind. I was spinning a high cadence and just riding my own tempo up the little rises.
I had forgotten about the lovely quiet roads that the PMC takes up through Truro, different from the P2P route.
On the final exposed parts on Rt 6 to P-Town, Peter and I managed to tag onto a well-matched rider and we ended up trading pulls for 6 or 7 miles. Although there was very little wind, it always feels like there is a headwind on that stretch. Mercifully, it was nothing like last year.
Peter and I rode the final stretch into the dunes. I felt wave after wave of emotion break over me as we rode through that beautiful stretch. We pulled strongly towards the end. Peter's wife, Sue, was on the finish line when we crossed, making it all the more special.
Peter and I got our obligatory PMC photos, which is a nice coda to the ride. I got a shower and gorged myself on lobster rolls and all the other abundant and excellent foods. The Harpoon IPA is an excellent analgesic at the end.
I opted for the 2pm fast ferry back to Boston and that was a great choice: 1.5 hours transit, nice seats, A/C, and a smooth ride.
What an operation PMC is. It staggers the mind.
Another memorable and gratifying PMC. Two down, many to go....
