Finally able to get in a ride after two weeks of cool and wet weather. Great early spring day with temps around 70. This ride hits six covered bridges, starting at Stayton city park, the location of the Jordan covered bridge. The first bridge on the ride crosses Thomas Creek at Bilyeu Den County Park (mile 11). Bridge #2 is Shimanek Covered Bridge at mile 15.2. It also crosses Thomas Creek. The next stretch is flat and covers Richardson Gap Rd to Larwood Drive. Bridge #3, Larwood Covered Bridge, makes for a nice rest stop. There is a little wayside there next to Crabtree Creek. Bridge #4, Hannah Bridge, is on Hungry Hill Rd out of Crabtree. There is a 5-6% climb on Highway 226 before reaching Scio. Bridge #5 is a little bonus bridge on a short bike path at the north end of Scio. It, too, crosses Thomas Creek. The last bridge, Gilkey, is at mile 43. There is a short, steep hill on Miller Cemetary Rd off Jefferson-Scio Drive. The final 8 miles is on Shelburn Rd, then River Drive (this avoids busy Stayon Scio Rd) and comes out 1.1 miles south of Stayon.
