A DRY DAY .... YES !!!!
For the first time in Spain and for the last 7 days today I did not get wet and the cycling was an absolute joy.
If you leave Gijon its always uphill and today started with a 500ft climb, there were lots of cyclists out, mainly going past me as they weren't carrying 15kg like I was. Anyway just about at the top a group of 6 went past and I put a spurt on - I was tailing my new Spanish cycling mates, they reached the left turn and they all did a U turn back down the hill .... Wimps !
So I was alone again but still lots of cyclists, one guy rode parallel and explained to me I must take a certain route to avoid a nasty hill, as it turned out my route was good and I missed the steep hill before dropping into Villaviciosa passing the Golf Club on the way.
I pressed on following the coastal road parallel to the motorway which I would only cross 12 times today !
Lunch was going to be at 42 miles at Ribadasella which I reached exactly on schedule at 2pm and found a good cafe called the Las Vegas where a Picadillo hit the spot !
I was again being spontaneous today, mo hotels booked but 2 plans and the decision would be made at lunch dependkng on both ghe weather and how strong the legs were ..
Option 1 Llanes at 60 miles
Option 2 Unquera at 75 miles
The decision was made and the hotel booked.
Although I had done all the big climbs of the day the Garmin was telling me I still had more climbing to do than I had done. The thing that did happen was they weren't as long and the gradients were better, so the post lunch riding was relatively easy and but for that pesky headwind again it would've been easy.
At about 3pm the sun came out for 20 minutes ! and it did so at the most beautiful part of the ride on the coast at San Antolin where the Rio de las Cabras o Bedon runs out to the sea below a massive pointed, wooden, rocky promontory with a beautiful white beach leading out to a crescent shaped bay ... Pi ture Postcard stuff.
I turned away from the coast and was immediately cycling up a wooden glade with glimpses og hillside villages ..
Then the sun went in 🤣
But my ride went on passing Llanes and on to Unquera ... the long option!
